Madras High Court Postpones Hearing in TVK Rally Stampede Case

On Sunday, September 28, 2025, the Madras High Court decided to cancel the scheduled hearing related to the tragic stampede that took place during the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) rally led by actor-turned-politician Vijay. The case was initially set to be heard at 4:30 p.m. However, after reviewing the submitted documents, the court determined that this was not a new case but rather an additional petition linked to an existing case already being heard. As a result, the hearing was postponed.

Rising Death Toll and Ongoing Inquiry

The tragedy, which occurred in Karur at Velusamypuram during a political gathering, has claimed 40 lives, according to police confirmations on the same day. In response, the state government appointed Retired Judge Aruna Jagadeesan to lead a one-woman inquiry commission tasked with investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Judge Jagadeesan began her inquiry by visiting the site of the rally on Sunday, aiming to collect first-hand information and evidence.

Legal Actions and Police Investigation

In the midst of the inquiry, police authorities have registered a case against TVK’s General Secretary, ‘Bussy’ Anand, along with two other individuals. This step was part of ongoing efforts to hold responsible parties accountable for the tragedy and to ensure thorough legal proceedings.

Additionally, the Madras High Court has taken a strong stance on preventing damage to public property by political parties. It has ordered the creation of guidelines to penalize political organizations that cause destruction during their campaigns, reinforcing the need for responsible conduct in public events.

Relief and Compensation Announced

Expressing deep sorrow over the loss of lives, Vijay released a statement on social media recognizing the magnitude of the tragedy and acknowledging that no words can truly comfort the families who have lost loved ones. He announced a financial compensation package of ₹20 lakh for each deceased family and ₹2 lakh for those injured and undergoing treatment.

The central and state governments have also pledged support to the victims’ families. Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared ex-gratia payments of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin, and ₹50,000 for those injured. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced an additional solatium of ₹10 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹1 lakh for the injured, demonstrating solidarity and support during this difficult time.
