Rajnath Singh Explains India’s Approach to Trump’s Tariff Move
Why India Didn’t React Immediately to Trump’s 50% Tariff: Rajnath Singh Explains

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh addressed the Indian community in Muscat on 21 September 2025, where he shed light on India’s trade strategy regarding the 50% tariff imposed by the Donald Trump-led administration on Indian imports.
Speaking at the event, Rajnath Singh said that India did not react immediately to the tariff decision because the country follows a broad-minded and strategic approach in handling international trade disputes. He highlighted that India believes in fostering long-term trade partnerships rather than engaging in hasty retaliatory measures.
India’s Trade Philosophy
Rajnath Singh underlined that India has always prioritized dialogue and diplomacy in global trade matters. Instead of taking impulsive actions, India prefers to analyze the broader economic impact, consult stakeholders, and make decisions that safeguard both national interests and international relationships.
Balancing Trade Relations with the US
The Defence Minister also noted that while the Trump administration’s tariff move impacted Indian exports, India valued its strategic and economic ties with the US. Maintaining stability in trade relations was considered more beneficial than reacting immediately with countermeasures.
Looking Ahead
India’s decision not to retaliate instantly reflects its matured stance in global trade politics. As Rajnath Singh pointed out, patience, calculated responses, and broader vision form the foundation of India’s trade policy, especially in dealing with major economies like the United States.
