Zaheer Khan Set for Stunning KKR Move After LSG Exit? IPL 2026 Buzz Grows
After parting ways with Lucknow Super Giants, Zaheer Khan is rumored to join Kolkata Knight Riders as mentor ahead of IPL 2026.
The coaching dynamics in the Indian Premier League (IPL) have shifted once again, with former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan stepping away from Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) after just a single season.
His departure, reportedly stemming from differences in vision with head coach Justin Langer and franchise owner Sanjeev Goenka, has immediately triggered speculation of a potential return to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) ahead of IPL 2026.
Zaheer had joined LSG in August 2024 as team mentor and was regarded as a strong influence in the dressing room, especially with skipper Rishabh Pant. However, according to an ESPNcricinfo report, a lack of clarity in decision-making within the franchise ultimately played a major role in LSG’s slide during the second half of IPL 2025. After a promising start of five wins in their first eight games, the team faltered badly, managing just one victory in their final six matches to finish seventh overall with six wins from 14 outings.
Despite the disappointing campaign, Zaheer left his mark tactically. He backed a consistent batting order, advising Pant to avoid the opener’s role while supporting Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram at the top. The results were impressive—Marsh amassed 627 runs, Nicholas Pooran thrived at No. 3 with 524, while Markram added 445. Still, Zaheer’s long-term, role-driven approach did not align with the franchise’s vision, leading to his exit.
Moving decisively after his departure, LSG appointed Bharat Arun as bowling coach on a two-year contract. Fresh from a successful tenure with KKR, which included their 2024 title win, Arun is expected to focus on both match preparation and nurturing upcoming pacers. There are also reports of Carl Crowe being lined up as a spin-bowling consultant.
Meanwhile, attention has shifted to KKR, who endured a disappointing IPL 2025. With Chandrakant Pandit relieved of his head coach duties and their bowling unit lacking experience, the franchise is considering Zaheer Khan for a key role in their support staff. If finalized, he would be tasked with guiding promising quicks like Harshit Rana, Vaibhav Arora, and Umran Malik.
Although official confirmation is yet to arrive, Zaheer’s availability and proven track record in developing talent make him a strong contender for the position. A move back to KKR would give the 46-year-old a quick chance to help shape another team’s fortunes as the countdown to IPL 2026 begins.
