Bay of Bengal Depression to Bring Torrential Rains to Bengal
West Bengal is bracing for a spell of intense rainfall as a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal moves inland, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned. The system, active since midweek, is expected to bring heavy to very heavy showers across southern districts of the state until the morning of October 6, 2025.
On Thursday, widespread rain lashed several regions, casting a shadow over Durga Puja celebrations on Bijoya Dashami, traditionally the festive finale when processions and immersion ceremonies take place across Bengal.
According to the IMD advisory, the districts of South 24 Parganas, Purba Medinipur, Paschim Medinipur, and Jhargram are likely to receive very heavy rainfall in isolated spots, with precipitation levels ranging between 7 cm and 20 cm. Kolkata and Howrah, meanwhile, are forecast to witness heavy downpours of 7–11 cm till Friday morning.
Authorities have urged residents to remain alert, particularly in low-lying areas, where waterlogging is likely. Precautions are being advised for those participating in post-Puja events and for commuters, as transport disruptions may occur due to continuous rain.
The weather office is monitoring the situation closely and is expected to issue fresh updates as the system progresses further inland.
