Uttarakhand Cloudburst: Man Rescued After 16 Hours Under Debris in Chamoli

Chamoli Faces Heavy Destruction, Rescue Operations Continue
Chamoli (Uttarakhand): In a miraculous rescue, a 32-year-old man was pulled out alive after being trapped for nearly 16 hours under debris caused by a massive cloudburst in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. The incident, which occurred late Friday night, triggered flash floods, landslides, and widespread destruction in several villages.
NDRF and SDRF Teams in Action
Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) rushed to the site immediately after the cloudburst was reported. Rescue workers tirelessly removed boulders and mud to reach the victim, who was stuck under collapsed structures.
Officials confirmed that the man, though injured and dehydrated, was found alive and immediately shifted to a local hospital for treatment. His condition is said to be stable.
Villages Cut Off, Roads Damaged
Heavy rainfall led to overflowing streams, washing away roads and isolating several villages in Chamoli. Electricity and communication lines have been badly affected, hampering rescue operations. Authorities have evacuated dozens of families to safer areas as rainfall continues in the upper Himalayan region.
Relief Measures and Warnings
The Uttarakhand government has issued alerts in nearby districts, urging people to stay away from vulnerable zones. Relief camps have been set up to provide shelter, food, and medical aid to affected villagers.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed relief over the successful rescue and praised the NDRF teams for their dedication. He assured that all possible assistance will be provided to the victims of this natural disaster.
A Reminder of Uttarakhand’s Fragile Ecology
Experts have once again highlighted how fragile Uttarakhand’s Himalayan terrain is to extreme weather events. With the frequency of cloudbursts and flash floods increasing in recent years, environmentalists have stressed the urgent need for better disaster preparedness and sustainable development in the region.
