PM Modi Hails Trump’s Gaza Peace Initiative as a Step Toward Stability
Calling it a viable path to lasting peace, Prime Minister Modi endorses Donald Trump’s new Gaza plan amid global attention
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has welcomed US President Donald Trump’s newly unveiled 20-point Gaza peace proposal, describing it as a “viable pathway to long-term and sustainable peace, security and development” in the Middle East.
In a post on X, Modi expressed optimism that “all concerned will come together behind President Trump’s initiative” and support efforts to end the conflict. The statement came a day after Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu jointly announced the plan at the White House.
Inside Trump’s 20-Point Gaza Plan
The document released by the White House calls for an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, and a phased Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. It also outlines the creation of a transitional government managed by an international body led by Trump, alongside former British Prime Minister Tony Blair. A key feature of the proposal is the demilitarisation of Gaza and its redevelopment through international aid and investment, while ensuring that no resident is forced to leave.
Trump, speaking alongside Netanyahu, said the agreement was “very close” but stressed that Israel would continue to receive “full US support” if Hamas rejected the deal. Netanyahu, while praising Trump as “a true friend of Israel,” signaled unease with some aspects of the plan, particularly provisions related to Palestinian Authority reforms and the pathway to future Palestinian statehood.
While Hamas has yet to formally respond, the Palestinian Authority welcomed the initiative and reiterated its willingness to work alongside the US and international partners to achieve a comprehensive solution.
Widespread Global Response
The plan has drawn a largely positive reaction from world leaders. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif hailed Trump’s leadership and supported efforts towards a two-state solution. In a joint statement, the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the UAE, Egypt, Qatar, Indonesia, Turkey, and Pakistan praised the initiative as a realistic step towards ending hostilities, rebuilding Gaza, and halting Israeli annexations.
European leaders also voiced cautious optimism. French President Emmanuel Macron called the proposal “an important chance to end the war and free hostages,” while Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described it as a “potential turning point” that could bring about a permanent ceasefire and secure humanitarian access. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer urged all sides to collaborate with Washington to ensure the plan translates swiftly into action. Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said the proposal offered hope to the suffering people of Gaza and warned that the opportunity “must not be wasted.”
What Lies Ahead
The proposal comes on the heels of Washington’s broader 21-point Middle East peace framework presented at the UN General Assembly last week. That plan also touched on Gaza reconstruction, cross-border security, and renewed dialogue for “peaceful coexistence” between Israelis and Palestinians.
With strong backing from India, Pakistan, and much of the Arab world, Trump’s Gaza initiative has gathered momentum even before Hamas’ official response. What remains crucial is whether the armed group and all stakeholders are willing to accept the terms, which could mark a decisive moment in ending nearly two years of devastating conflict in the region.
